The Room They Made
Capturing her family’s memories through material forms is the central focus of Sophie’s new ongoing photo series. In her self-portrait, “The Room They Made”, she is pictured in her grandmother’s home, with a portrait of her great-grandmother hanging behind her. She holds a quilt that was begun by her great-great-grandmother and completed by other women in the family. Even the bed frame comes from her great-grandmother’s home.
Family has always been a grounding force in Sophie’s life, and as time passes, she feels an urgency to explore the parts of her family history she may not yet fully know. Conversations with her grandmother about the quilt and the heirlooms passed down through generations have sparked new stories and creative inspiration for this series. As she photographs, Sophie reflects on her maternal lineage and how the women on her mother’s side have shaped both her sense of self and the spaces that she grew up in.
