First Year
5:14pm
The unnoticed actions and moments are things we take for granted. A small smile your brother gives you when you are driving along the coast towards home, the lighting of a cigarette to smoke with a couple of your friends before entering back into the party, or tucking your hair behind your ear to feel the warm, bright sunlight hit your face during the summer. I've wanted to create a project like this for some time now. I tried to start it last semester, but we got cut short, and I did not get to. I want to fulfill the potential for a photography project like this one since I feel a personal connection to it. I think that many others will be able to connect to the images created as well since all of them are things that everyday people do all the time. Each carries a particular emotion with them. Building this project with 35mm black and white film is another element that gives more character to the overall image of the piece. I add in a couple images shot on digital because I knew I couldn't leave them out of this project. Black and white plays with nostalgia, to which the viewer will ask if the image relates to a memory of their own or another person. It brings a sense of familiarity and tones of reminiscence of joyous moments. The title, "5:14 pm," is a time of the day that no one generally thinks about. During the fall and winter months, this is around the time the sun starts to set and create the orange glow that ends the day. It may sound cheesy, but the sunset is something I look forward to every day. Even if I am having a bad day, the sunset will always be a small, happy thing that keeps the day good. It's a tiny moment that people take for granted, and those kinds of moments need to be embraced and appreciated.

Strands of Thoughts
Strands of Thoughts resembles what is hidden underneath the surface of a human face. It is interpreted feelings, emotions, and ideas that go through someone's mind and are now placed on the outside. The different patterns and colors stitched on to the models face are whatever the viewer wants to perceive it as. One person may have an idea of happiness while someone else may see the frustration. Whatever feeling or thought resonates with the viewer is for them to experience. Being able to touch and feel the thread sewn into the glossy paper is an experience and give the viewer another sense to relate to.
