The Past, Present, & Future
Self-identity for me has always revolved around where I grew up. I am from a small suburb of Los Angeles, California, called Palos Verdes Estates. It is a peninsula about 40 minutes south of LA, and growing up in this environment has helped me evolve my loves and fears. At the top of the collage, there is a vintage map of my hometown from around the 1940s-50s. I also included palm trees in the collage since they have always surrounded me, and they are a symbol for Southern California. I added two to help balance the figures and to have more black in the image. In the background, there are graphics of ocean waves to add on to the subject of living near the ocean since I have always lived a minimum of a 5-minute drive to the beach. I added the image of my hand and a film camera since I have been creating with cameras for over seven years now. That is an image I took with my digital camera, so adding my own photos to the collage is an important piece. The atomical heart overlayed on the portrait's head (an actual self-portrait of me) represents how I think with my heart and not my head. The green paint splatter over the eye of the figurehead is a representation of a family disorder. My grandmother has macular degeneration in both her eyes and will eventually become blind, and this is something that is passed down the gene pool. So, I know in the future I will have this disease, and I am newly coming to terms with this information. So, the green paint splatters are new parts of my identity, and the pink splatters are the old and beginning parts of what formed my identity.
